November continues with the end of Aippasi and ushers in the holy month of Karthigai, which is closely associated with Lord Murugan and fire rituals. The month starts with post Diwali rituals and is followed by the grand festival of Karthigai Deepam. This festival, often referred to as the “festival of lights of the South,” involves lighting rows of oil lamps (agal vilakku) in homes and temples. The main event is the lighting of the Maha Deepam atop Arunachala Hill in Thiruvannamalai, witnessed by lakhs of devotees. This is considered a highly spiritual month, ideal for prayers, cleansing, and devotion to fire and light.
Astrologically, Karthigai is a powerful month ruled by the Krittika Nakshatra, which symbolizes divine fire. It is believed that worshipping fire during this time purifies karma and enhances spiritual strength. Weddings and major functions begin to resume toward the end of the month after the inauspicious periods of Purattasi and Aippasi pass. Astrologers often recommend Karthigai month muhurthams for new beginnings, including business openings and housewarming ceremonies.
Karthigai Deepam, typically falling in mid to late November, is one of the grandest spiritual events in Tamil Nadu. Homes are beautifully decorated with oil lamps, and temples hold deepa aradhana (lamp rituals) in the evening. The holy flame atop Annamalai hills symbolizes the eternal light of divinity. Many fast, meditate, and chant during this festival to invoke the blessings of Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan.
Another important celebration is Skanda Sashti, a six-day fasting and devotional observance in honor of Lord Murugan’s victory over the demon Soorapadman. The final day, Soorasamharam, is reenacted in Murugan temples through dramatic performances. It is considered one of the most powerful times for spiritual transformation and inner purification, and many devotees perform strict fasting and chanting during this period.
