August marks the end of Aadi and the beginning of Avani, which is a month deeply rooted in the worship of Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna. Avani Avittam, the sacred thread ceremony, is celebrated by Brahmin communities across Tamil Nadu. This ritual involves the changing of the sacred thread (janeu) and is considered highly auspicious. Devotees also celebrate Krishna Janmashtami (the birth of Lord Krishna), which falls during Avani. Temples host special kirtans, bhajans, and midnight prayers to mark Krishna's birth, and families observe fasting and recite Krishna's stories. Gokulashtami, another name for Krishna's birthday, is one of the most festive events of the month.
Astrologically, the Nakshatras in Avani are monitored closely to identify auspicious timings for spiritual activities and marriage. The Shukla Paksha (waxing moon phase) is especially important, with astrologers recommending this period for rituals focused on prosperity and blessings. The position of Venus and Jupiter during this month is favorable for relationships and weddings.
Krishna Janmashtami is one of the most celebrated festivals during this month. Devotees observe night-long vigils, fasting, and recite stories of Lord Krishna’s childhood miracles. The festival brings together families, communities, and temples, uniting everyone in devotional activities. It is also a time for spiritual reflection and renewal of vows.
Avani Avittam, a significant ritual for the Brahmin community, involves the changing of the sacred thread and the recitation of Vedic hymns. This ritual is not only a cultural obligation but is also considered spiritually purifying for participants, helping them connect with divine wisdom and knowledge.

It also lists festivals, religious observances, and special days like Ekadashi, Pournami, and Amavasya. The calendar may display details about planetary positions, and horoscopes for the month. Additionally, it includes key agricultural dates and local cultural events. Tamil calendars also highlight lunar months like Chithirai, Aadi, and Thai, providing a spiritual connection to Tamil traditions.
