November continues with the end of Aippasi and ushers in the holy month of Karthigai, which is closely associated with Lord Murugan and fire rituals. The month starts with post Diwali rituals and is followed by the grand festival of Karthigai Deepam. This festival, often referred to as the “festival of lights of the South,” involves lighting rows of oil lamps (agal vilakku) in homes and temples. The main event is the lighting of the Maha Deepam atop Arunachala Hill in Thiruvannamalai, witnessed by lakhs of devotees. This is considered a highly spiritual month, ideal for prayers, cleansing, and devotion to fire and light.
Astrologically, Karthigai is a powerful month ruled by the Krittika Nakshatra, which symbolizes divine fire. It is believed that worshipping fire during this time purifies karma and enhances spiritual strength. Weddings and major functions begin to resume toward the end of the month after the inauspicious periods of Purattasi and Aippasi pass. Karthigai Deepam, typically falling in mid to late November, is one of the grandest spiritual events in Tamil Nadu.
